I love Canada. I'm a big fan of the culture and way of life of our neighbors to the North (or south if you're in Detroit). I married a woman of French-Canadian blood, and am obsessed with a game perfected by Canadians. However I have a gripe...
There are few things about Afghanistan that remind me of home. However when I arrived in Kandahar and found TGI Friday, KFC and a few other American brands, it helped the process of acclimation. However when I looked on the map and it said "Tim Hortons" my heart nearly jumped out of my chest.
Anyone that knows me is well aware of my affinity for good coffee. Tim Horton's has in my mind perfected coffee. When I lived in Detroit and Harper Woods I was just a few blocks away from my favorite coffee. Now a whole world away from North America, I found a Tim Hortons...
But wait a minute...
The Canadians ended their combat role in Southern Afghanistan last year, only participating in a logistical role these days. Apparently when they left, Tim Horton's did too. Nobody bothered to update the maps!
So I dragged 10 guys from my company across the base to Tim Horton's only to find an empty building. It was a depleting feeling. But my spirits were raised a bit when I found that the Canadians did leave the ice rink behind! Alas, there is still a little bit of home to be enjoyed here in the sand box.
Until next time...
Chris
