We arrived in country at Kandahar Air Field last Sunday. Our first week here has been spent acclimating to the warmer climate, taking specialized classes, and enjoying a little bit of down time. I cannot post our next movement, but I will say that I get a little more time to relax here before getting down to the busy work.
The base here is a typical war zone setting...concrete barricades 15 feet high line most of the roads. There are 42 countries here, so this truly is an international effort. It's been fun meeting people from different countries and getting their take on various things. In the end we're all really the same, we just call somewhere else "home." The food is great though. The Americans, Germans, British, and Afghans all have a dining facility so experiencing different types of food is quite fun.
The base is also home to the Kandahar "Boardwalk" which is the largest western style "mall" in Afghanistan. There are 60 shops that surround an outdoor complex that includes a soccer field, hockey rink, and basketball court.
The weather has been 80 degrees with intense sun during the day, and 50's at night. It's not very comfortable for me, coming from a colder climate where I've been very comfortable, but it is what it is...Gotta do the job.
I've been loading up on reading material, thanks to my mom's wonderful Christmas gift of 13 history books. I'll be busy with those for quite a while.
More to come...including pictures.
Chris
