Since issuing my plea to help raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project, readers of this blog have donated more than $8,100 to the cause. It is far more than I had ever expected. It was an amazing show of support from people I've never met, that somehow feel connected to what we're doing here. The amazing thing is that only a handful of the 46 donors were related to any of the soldiers soldiers I work with. When I issued the call to action that was pretty much the only attention I had expected to garner!
Another group has now stepped up to help in an even larger way.
Those who know me know of my obsession with sports. From Michigan State University athletics to Detroit sports, I am always "in season" for something. Over the past several months I developed a passion for Detroit City FC, a soccer team in Detroit, Michigan. The passion for this team transcends the game, as the whole community has embraced the organization's support of themes that promote the City of Detroit.
Their biggest fan group the Northern Guard Supporters has decided they wanted to step up and be a hero to the heroes. Gene and Ken Butcher, the founders of NGS contacted me about a drive to unite soccer fans in support of the Wounded Warrior Project. They said they were moved by the courage of men like Smith and Sisco and after hearing their stories, wanted to be a partner in the cause.
What has resulted in just a week or so has astounded me. Soccer fans from across America have jumped on board. From all corners of the country people want to be involved with "Hooligans for Heroes." It is the support of people like this--strangers, uniting to help our wounded heroes that really show the true colors of the American people. The outpouring of support from soccer fans across America is just another example of why I love this country.
Thanks NGS, and everyone who has seen fit to be involved in this great cause.
Until next time...
Chris
