A book review...
If you've known me for more than a minute you are very aware of my love for history. I believe that by examining where we are coming from we can get an understanding of where we are headed.
During my deployment to Afghanistan I read 22 books, completing 17 and finishing the remaining 5 in the last few months since returning home. I read books on subjects as varied as sports, social issues, psychology, and space. My favorite subject though, as always, was history. There was one book that transcended military history, psychology, and even business.
Brothers Rivals Victors: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, and The Partnership That Drove The Allied Conquest In Europe is one of the greatest books I have ever read.
It breaks down our war heroes in a way that is both entertaining and informative. We know the about the people behind the names of those three, but nobody has ever taken the time to break down their relationships and figure out just how they were able to work so well (and sometimes not so well) together to lead the allies to victory over Germany.
This is not just a history book. I read about how the relationship between Eisenhower and his dog helped him get through the frustration of the partnership with England. I learned about Patton's ego and the way he used the media to push his personal agenda.
It is a book about history, but it is far from boring. I couldn't put it down! If you are interested in the Wold War II or the events that lead to post war European reconstruction, this is a must read.
Bonus if you buy on Amazon Kindle there are many photos not found in the print edition
Until next time...
Chris
