Back in the civilian world I loved Memorial Day. It was a great way to start the summer by golfing, fishing, or drinking beer while standing around the grill. It was always a great opportunity to get together with family or friends.
Times have changed.
Now I've joined the ranks of those honored on Memorial Day. It's like that day you grow up and realize that Christmas is not about toys, but the birth of Jesus. This is a tremendous opportunity for us to teach others just how uniquely American our patriotism can be. This is a weekend for both that picnic, and the solemn reverence that gives this holiday its name.
In America we honor our dead with pagentry and reverence. There is nothing more American than a parade down Main Street, with the Red, White, and Blue leading the way. It always gave me chills when adults and children alike would stand in respect to what that flag symbolizes. Without those sacrifices we would not have the freedoms that we so willingly take advantage of.
MY CHALLENGE TO YOU
It is not wrong to have a BBQ and drink beer this weekend. It is not wrong to watch the Indy 500 or go golfing. However I challenge everyone who reads this to take just 30 minutes of their time to learn about the soldiers we honor this weekend. Check out the resources online to find out just what our soldiers are doing in far off lands. I think you would be surprised to know that there are some very unique missions that are helping a lot of people in need. Attend a local parade, thank a veteran, or perhaps donate just a few dollars to help the cause of the wounded warriors that are coming home.
It is truly an honor to serve this great country. I love this job, and the people I work with. The only thing I love more is the people back home that I have sworn to defend. I will not have time to celebrate this weekend. I will be out defending the interests of the United States, proudly wearing the flag on my shoulder. Please enjoy a couple drinks this weekend knowing you will be safe with myself and the boys of Blackhawk Company, 1-23 Infantry out doing what we do best!
Until next time...
Chris
PS... This memorial day weekend my deepest thoughts and prayers are with the family of SPC Philip Schiller, my brother in arms. We lost SPC Schiller on April 11 during a firefight. I pray that his family will find warmth and comfort knowing that we have continued to fight with his spirit carrying us along every day.
